Summer Unwrapped… Double birthday party

My two friends’ birthdays are just a couple days apart and we had a birthday party for the two of them. They each got to pick out their own special birthday cake.

This year was Jackie’s “golden” birthday, so she said she wanted there to be gold on her cake. Since her favorite color is purple, I went with a royalty theme (which suites her). Jackie’s cake is a 8″ round double chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing and filling. I carved the cake so that it would have the little crown points on top. Then I covered the whole cake in purple fondant. The balls are white fondant painted with gold Luster Dust. I pipped all the rest of the decorations on with royal icing and once it dried I hand painted it with the gold Luster Dust. In the end I was very happy with my first attempt with this style of cake!

Ali’s cake wasn’t as fancy looking, but it tasted MARVELOUS! Ali loves coffee… and all things coffee related. She used to work at Starbucks and always has a cup of coffee in her hand. Ali’s cake is an 8″ espresso cake with vanilla cappuccino buttercream. I then made her little coffee to-go cups out of fondant for decoration.

Summer Unwrapped… Sweetheart hedgehog

In the beginning of the summer I received an email from a friend I haven’t see since High School. She was going to be getting married and asked for a hedgehog groom’s cake. The groom loves hedgehogs and it was also going to be the little ring bearer’s birthday and she wanted something special for them to sing Happy Birthday to.

I baked a two layer yellow cake with a chocolate buttercream filling. I rounded off the top of the cake to make it domed shape. Then I covered it with chocolate buttercream icing. The head is a piece of cake that I carved then covered in fondant. The cake is covered in about 1,000 chocolate dipped pretzels. From beginning to end, this little 8 inch cake was about 12 hours of labor. But it was well worth it and everyone loved it!

Summer Unwrapped… The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I have been so busy this summer! Orders have been pouring in booking all my weekend. I wanted to share with you a few of my most memorable orders from this past summer!

In June I made a second birthday cake for a little boy that we know. His mom is principal of the local elementary school. So naturally, she loves books! I made a cake based off of Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar children’s book. The caterpillar has several cupcakes with hand painted gumpaste foods that the caterpillar eats through  on his journey to a bellyache. The last cupcake has a leaf, the last thing that the hungry caterpillar ate that cured his bellyache!  This cake was so much fun to make! My favorite part was making the different gumpaste foods then hand painting them with petal dust.

My favorite part of this whole experience was that now if you ask little Liam what Boof does, he responds “Makes cakes!”
